Q: What are the new things that you‘re seeing drivethe growth in the smart door lock space?你看到有哪些新事物推动智能门锁的增长?
Sean:Yeah good question. So, to begin kind of one of the easiest answer to that is justincrease market adoption, you know smart home is starting to ramp as we’ve expected for a long time. But one of the earlier purchases kind of after those two initial ones is door locks so we‘re kind of seeing this ramp up his door locks are finally being kind of integrated into the smart home ecosystem, as well as a lot of apartment blocks using door locks, now smart door locks can give them versatility.

So as we’re kind of moving through 2021, we just expect the market to start increasing adoption of this. We‘re moving from leading to kind of mainstream and that’s kind of a big part of it. On top of that, all the ecosystems are making big pushes into smart homes these days. So you know, when these tech giants sorts of start to make actual strides breaking into this market and to kind of pushing this market forward then.A variety of peripheral equipment also began to develop, so that’s kind of going to start driving a lot of business in this market. More tractions because these tech giants are bringing a lot of attention to them so that is a big part of itfor door lock specifically. So there will be a secondary communication from the Wi-Fi radio, which was plugged into a wall socket to the lock itself. With recent improvements in battery life constraints or battery life consumption that hasallowed for the Wi-Fi radios actually moved into the lock which makes the user experience a little bit easier and kind of make it gives them one less thing that they have to buy and install one of the things to keep their eyes on so that‘syou know has shorten the battery life, a little bit because the Wi-Fi still ismore power hungry than other protocols. But was also allowed for kind ofan easier installation process, which is a big focus for this for this market.

And then finally security, so this is kind of more of a shuffling around and all ofiot again. Sean:Yeah so a lot of these regulations and for context, some of the big ones are SB-327, which is a California state bill. And a couple others that are all cominginto the market, they have certain requirements that are very relevant to the door lock market big to secure device. A lot of this includes some temper detection, so this is more so for the kind of our customers when they get the devices, knowing that it hasn‘t been tampered with kind of as the temper detection suggests, but then also for security bug. The under lying requirements behind them is that they need to verify when someone is going into them and checking their code and requirements are going to require devices to confirm the identities and make sure that these users, that are changing the code actually have permission to modify the code.很多安全机制包括篡改检测(temper detection),对于我们的客户来说,当他们得到设备时即便知道设备没有被篡改,但也有安全漏洞。背后的底层需求是,当有人要接入设备或代码时,需要验证且确认身份,并确保正在更改代码的用户实际上有修改代码的权限。
On top of that there’s also security storage so understanding that accessing the code is going to need certain keys and making sure that those keys are stored in a safe manner. Having the device be physically secure and that hasn‘t been tampered with through either voltage attacks through heat attacks any kind of physical stimulus althrough any kind of modifications electrically so all of these are kind of building requirements in the security regulations that apply to this market.

And kind of our goal with security, especially our kind of recent is to satisfy all of these and to add on top of that, so bringing in a couple of other elements. Q:As you mentioned, regulations is definitely one way to have a customer change in their product lines. As a customer I’m looking for something that’s changing the way it interacts with my house oradding a new feature so I‘ve heard a lot of changes in the industry through the standards and ecosystems, for example, I’ve heard recently about Project CHIP and OpenThread, Bluetooth mesh and Z-wave long range. Sean:Yeah so Product CHIP (Matter) is a good example let‘s start there so Product CHIP (Matter), especially is kind of is very important to alot of our customers, because of the opportunity it provides to work with both several major ecosystems, you know Apple and Google are both working very hardon shipping.

As well as the kind of the overarching end device market where our manufacturers kind of get an easier design process, so you know getting from the ideation to actual design. On home depot or Walmart’s floor where they can sell it and then not having to worry about building specific designs for you know your apple is ecosystem or Google‘s ecosystem and sidewalk.

On the other hand, remote access is a benefit of Z-Wave and is really beneficial to the door lock market because you know the access points on your property aren’t just limited to your physical house the physical building itself. But there are exterior access points that you want to control as well, such as your front gate or you know your garage door.

Q:
Yeah you‘d mentioned the tech when they joined together forsomething like Project CHIP will do good to the industry. But beyond that sowe’ve talked about security regulations and the standards can you talk aboutsome new innovative features for door lock designs?

Sean:The door lock market as a whole, outside of smart things you know it‘s a pretty stable market. There’s not been a lot of innovation there for a while, but with the introduction of smart things, it‘s opened up a whole range of new possibilities. You mentioned the user approach one so for those around user approaches, the door lock automatically opens so it makes the transition easier. It’s kind a similar thing, if you forget to lock your door, the door itself automatically blocks. Those are two really interesting experiences. there‘s a couple of technologies that are being developed around this that provides kind of distance measurement. That we’re Silicon Labs is investigating and kind of putting some resources into.

Another innovation we have which isinteresting is the addition of hall effect sensors. But on top of that there‘s a new kind of series of features that include understanding if the doors physically open or closed to provide extra information. You know those are someof the major innovations in high levels that have come to the market and we’re really interested in seeing how our customers managed to take advantage of the main drive value to the end consumer themselves. I believe that there are locks that are realizing this value now and we hope that it will become more popularas people realize that that‘s a big frustration.

Sean:yeah so in general, you know one of the biggest benefits of SiliconLabs that we’re a protocol agnostic company so regardless of the protocol that our customers come to us with, we really have a solution for them. On Wi-Fi specifically, as that‘s kind of a big initiative for us this past year, with the acquisition of Redpine is more cost efficient for our solutions.

To a potential customer or a current customer that‘s looking to kind of expand to anew protocol or a new line of business, if they want to operate in a new ecosystem or bring a Wi-Fi product into their portfolio. And also we have some reference designs on github, people can use as a starting point for door locks.
