Mobile World Congress to Highlight LTE
Next week, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, LTE (Long-Term Evolution) wireless
technology will be highlighted for the first time by several companies. Formerly called the 3GSM World
Congress, the new name seems appropriate (but not as catchy) for the biggest wireless show on earth,
since the emphasis now goes well beyond both 3G and GSM. Many people equate LTE with "4G"
cellular, and it is generally considered to be the successor to 3G solutions like UMTS/HSPA and 1xEV-DO,
but with rollouts early in the next decade. Baseband chip companies like Freescale, NXP and Qualcomm
have announced that they will be showing their early LTE prototypes at the Congress. But, cellular is not the
only wireless technology promoted at the event, since WiMAX, femtocell and GPS solutions will also
abound. We will attend and will share our views of important product and technology introductions in our
next newsletter.
