Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Objective: Verification that the product is robust against electrostatic discharge, which
can be excepted during handling of the devices. The ESD robustness is
equivalent to the maximum voltage this product can withstand. Testing is
done according to the Human Body Model as described below.
Human Body Model (HBM)
Method: EIA/JESD22-A114-B
Flow: Determination of all relevant pins. Discharge according to the Human Body
Model (1.5 kΩ, 100 pF, for each pin combination, one positive and one
negative discharge).
The specified ESD robustness determines the stress voltages used for the
ESD test. A set of devices for the stress voltage 0 V is used for reference
purpose only.
The safe guard voltage can be used to demonstrate that the product is safe
in its limits.
If the product has different ESD specifications for individual pins then the
ESD test has to be performed for these pins separately.
Comment: The human body ESD is simulated by discharging a 100 pF capacitor
through a 1500 Ω resistor. The capacitor is charged and discharged onto a
pin using both plus and minus polarities while simultaneously contacting
either a VSS (ground) or VCC (Power) pin as reference.
The Human Body Model simulates the electrostatic discharge which is
typically observed during manual handling of devices from a person without
ESD protection. The circuit diagram for this procedure is shown below.
